This is the first time that cross-border shelling has been exchanged between Israel and Syria since the start of the recent escalation in the Gaza Strip.

On Tuesday night, Israel shelled Syrian territory with artillery and mortar in response to shelling from Syrian territory into the Golan Heights, which it occupied in 1967, according to a military spokesman.

A military source in southern Syria said that a Palestinian faction fired three missiles towards Israel.

This new movement raises fears that the violence will lead to a broader war, as Israel exchanges fire across the border with Lebanese Hezbollah and fights militants of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) in Gaza.

The Israeli army said that its soldiers opened fire “towards the source of the launch in Syria.” It did not provide details.

The report stated: “A short time ago, a number of launches were monitored from Syria towards Israeli territory.” According to the army, some of the shells crossed the border and landed on the Israeli side, while some were assumed to have fallen in uninhabited areas.

A Syrian military source told the Syrian News Agency (SANA) that its air defences "intercepted the enemy's missiles and downed some of them" but that some material damage was caused. It said that no causalities has been reported.

This is the first time that cross-border shelling has been exchanged between Israel and Syria since the start of the recent escalation in the Gaza Strip, after Hamas launched a surprise operation against the Hebrew state on Saturday.

The launching of missiles from Syrian territory, and the Israeli response to it, came hours after the military wing of Hamas (Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades) claimed responsibility for launching missiles from southern Lebanon towards Israel.

The rocket launch from Lebanon was followed by an exchange of fire between the Israeli army and Hezbollah.
