A Muslim woman was beaten and her hijab ripped of her head by two men in Toronto in an incident police are investigating as a hate crime, local news outlet City News reported Tuesday.
Police officials told City News the woman was picking up her children on Monday at their Grenoble Public elementary school in the Flemingdon Park area.

According to the information, the two men approached the woman and began screaming anti-Islamic and racist insults at her.

They also called her a “terrorist” and told her to “go back to your country.” And then, one of the men punched her in the stomach, while the second individual ripped off her hijab as she yelled at the them to stop.

Police also told City News that the men stole her cellphone.
The woman’s brother, identified only as Owais, expressed his outrage.
“I was already told on the phone that the situation looks like a hate crime, from an officer that called me,” Owais said. “When I saw her obviously she was crying … her kids were crying.”

He said this is a “scene that no human wants to see.”
The woman, who was also punched in the jaw, was later released from hospital after being treated for severe stomach pains.
Police have not identified the perpetrators, but described them as white between the ages of 30 and 35.

According to City News, not far from where that attacked happened, a relative of the woman discovered anti-Muslim graffiti on the wall of their apartment building that read “Muslims not welcome.”
Police officials confirmed the graffiti, but have not yet found a link between both incidents.
