Brazilian Film Festivals Tackle Israel-Palestine Conflict

Several films portray different versions of the conflicts in Gaza and Israel's ongoing occupation of Palestinian territories.

The conflict between Israel and Palestine has reached two Brazilian Film Festivals in the city of Sao Paulo: The Jewish Film Festival and the International Arab World Film Festival.

The Jewish Film Festival, which started on Tuesday and ends Sunday, will screen the movie “Life Sentence,” a film about a relationship between an arab fighter and a Jewish woman.

“Dancing in Jaffa”, a documentary about a dancing teacher that gives lessons both to Jewish and Palestinian children, is also scheduled in the festival.

Movies from Israel, France, Canada, Germany, US, Brazil, Poland, Belgium, Czech Republic, and Macedonia have been screened during the festival.

The International Arab World Film Festival, which begins on August 13, will have a special series called “Palestinian Cinema.”

It will be screen the movie “Omar,” a fictional film about a Palestinian freedom fighter captured by the Israeli army.

“Omar” won both the jury prize in Cannes and the best movie award in Dubai’s International Film Festival in 2013.

Another scheduled film is “Diaries,” which tells the story of three Palestinian women who try to build new lives after Israel’s occupation.

The Arab film festival's manager, Geraldo Adriano Godoy de Campos, said that these films were chosen to help Brazilian people better understand what’s happening in Palestine.

“People see everyday the news about Gaza, but they can’t understand how the daily lives of people there,” said Godoy de Campos.
