The fight for LGBT rights has continued around the world as LGBT activists and supporters continue to carry the banner from one generation to the next. Where some nations have over time welcomed a more progressive outlook and watched as armies of gay pride supporters marched down the streets, other countries continue to struggle with prejudice and tradition.

Two years later in Mexico, over 1,000 people filled the streets of Mexico City in solidarity with the movement. In 2009, same-sex marriage was legalized, although parts of the nation still prohibit it. New themes are chosen to center the annual event which now draws 400,000 visitors.

South Africa was the first country on the African continent to initiate a LGBT pride march which took place in 1990. In 2006, the nation stood out as the second country outside Europe to legalize same-sex marriage.

Denmark has maintained one of the world’s oldest public lgbt communities and celebrates annually since the founding of the National Association for Gays and Lesbians in 1948. The city of Copenhagen draws as many as 20,000 to their their parades every year.

In 1997, the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil joined the rainbow parade as nearly 2,000 supporters walked the nation’s first gay parade. The city has become the world’s largest venue for LGBT parades with 3.2 million registered participants in 2009.

Nepal’s Blue Diamond Society were behind the nation’s first pride parade in 2001. Masks are worn to prevent any residual discrimination from homophobic communities. The parades usually coincides with the Gaijatra festival which commemorates the passing of friends of that year.

Taiwan first pride parade emerged from Taipei, with just over 1,000 participants in 2003. Though the country’s culture still considers homosexuality a taboo, annual events draw hundreds of thousands from both Japan and Thailand.

Guayana celebrated its first gay parade on June 3, 2018. According to Guayana Trans United, a community of transgenders, “The influence of Jamaica Homophobic music has been impacting the hate in Guyana.”
