Brazil Coup Govt Expels Artists From Culture Ministry Building

Heavily armed police arrived and roughly evicted the demonstrators, ending a 70-day occupation by artists opposed to the coup government.

Federal police in Brazil Monday raided an occupation protest at the Gustavo Capanema Palace, home of the Ministry of Culature in Rio de Janeiro, forcefully removing a group of artists who had taken over the building after the coup-imposed government of President Michel Temer shuttered the government ministry.

Heavily-armed police arrived during the early morning hours and gave the occupants five minutes to voluntarily leave. After a brief period of negotiation with those inside, police extended the deadline to thirty minutes.

Midia Ninja, a news outlet present during the raid, said one woman was attacked by police when the deadline expired. In a video it posted online, a woman can be seen being dragged down a set of winding stairs by police in riot gear.
