Argentina: Columbus Statue Replaced by Female Freedom Fighter

The presidents of Argentina and Bolivia unveiled Wednesday what is now Argentina’s largest statue, in the process making a big statement about Latin America’s past and future.

The 15-meter-high statue of freedom fighter Juana Azurduy ousted the more traditional icon of the region, Christopher Columbus.

In replacing a man with a woman and a “discoverer” or colonizer with a “guerrilla,” many feel this statue makes an important statement beyond its physical presence.
