Late former president and leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro was born in 1926 in the small town of Biran, where his father owned a large sugar cane plantation. Located about 60 miles away from Santiago de Cuba where Fidel was burried alongside independence leader Jose Marti and other national heroes, Biran is best known as the hometown of Fidel and his younger brother, President Raul Castro.
Fidel Castro governed Cuba for half a century after leading the revolutionary army that overthrew the brutal U.S.-backed dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista in 1959. The iconic leader died on Nov. 25 at the age of 90.
