Russia will ramp up its aid in the fight against Ebola, including sending an experimental drug that has shown in trials to be effective against the deadly disease.

Russia will bolster its fight against the Ebola virus and its cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO), the President Vladimir Putin said on Monday.

In a meeting the director-general of the WHO, Margaret Chan Putin said, "We must act wisely to prevent the spread of this disease among our population.”

The President said Russia is considering sending planes with special medical equipment to add to the team of Russian health professionals currently in Guinea.

Russia also announced that they will send the new anti-viral drug "triazavirin" which could be able to successfully treat Ebola.

The Health Minister Veronika Skvortsova said on Monday that, “In the next two months we will produce enough triazavirin to send to our team in Guinea.”

The deadly Ebola epidemic broke out in southern Guinea in February, and since then spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and Senegal.  The WHO says that there have been over 8,000 cases of Ebola, with over 4,000 being fatal.
