The Portuguese star striker for Real Madrid is the only soccer player to ever win the trophy four times. Messi received it three times.

Real Madrid's Portuguese star striker Cristiano Ronaldo just keeps on piling up historic feats as he became on Tuesday the first soccer player ever to win four Golden Boots, which on this occasion was granted for his 48 goals in 35 appearances last season.

Cristiano Ronaldo's hat-trick in the last game of the previous season took his total goals to 48, which is two short of the all-time record set by his rival Lionel Messi for Barcelona in 2012.

Ronaldo, 30, who led all scorers in Europe's domestic leagues last season, said he was very pleased to receive the trophy, but added he still wants more Golden Boot awards.

“I always want more. I know I am the only one to have four but I want more,” he said. “That implies winning trophies with the world’s greatest club. This year will be no different and we want to win La Liga, the Cup and the Champions League. I hope we see each other again next year.”

The forward, who recently broke the club's record for more goals with 324 over Raul's 323, has won the Golden Boot three times with Real Madrid and once with Manchester United in the 2007-2008 season. He also just joined the 500 Club with over 501 goals in his career.

“I never planned on winning four times,” Ronaldo said. “Maybe one or two yes but never four.”

Ronaldo was accompanied at the awards ceremony by his mother, his son, the Madrid coach Rafa Benitez, club president Florentino Perez and the Portuguese ambassador to Spain.

After saying this was “another great moment in my career,” Ronaldo said that “without my teammates, I would not be able to win individual awards.”

Perez said, “This award goes back to show that we have a unique and exceptional player in Cristiano Ronaldo.”

According to the Daily Mail, the Golden Boot award is weighted to permit players from stronger leagues, such as the Premier League and La Liga, to win even if they score fewer goals than a player in a weaker league.

“Weightings are determined by the league's ranking on the UEFA coefficients, with goals scored in the top five leagues multiplied by a factor of two and goals scored in the leagues ranked six to 21 by 1.5,” the British news outlet explained.
