The Argentine national was given permission to supervise the training session from the mobility scooter as he recovers from a ruptured Achilles tendon.

As Ecuador prepared for its first World Cup 2018 qualifier against Argentina this week, national coach Gustavo Quinteros encouraged the Tricolor to put the engine at full throttle – from aboard his own motorized scooter.

The Argentine national was given permission to supervise the training session from the mobility scooter as he recovers from a ruptured Achilles tendon.

During the training session in the Ecuadorean capital of Quito, Quinteros slowly rolled along the sideline, popping his clipboard in the front basket.

Qualifiers for the football tournament in Russia begin in Latin America on Thursday, as Ecuador take on Argentina in Buenos Aires, and Bolivia at home the following week.

Quinteros said that his home country’s national side is “the best team in the continent,” but “Ecuador will try to do the job that suits in pursuit of a good result.”

“Ecuador will try to pressure Argentina in their own area, try to take the ball as soon as possible and avoid them enclosing us in our own area,” he added.

A further pain in the leg for Ecuador is that they will be without injured West Ham forward Enner Valencia, but will be relieved that Argentina will be without their star player, Leo Messi, who is also out with a knee injury.

Thursday will also see opening qualifiers of Bolivia versus Uruguay, Colombia versus Peru, Venezuela versus Paraguay, and Chile versus Brazil.
