Ecuador: 2 Legislative Commissions Open Probes on Panama Papers

Two Ecuador's legislative commissions opened Wednesday a joint probe on “Panama Papers.”

The process will investigate “what happened with a naturalized or legal person allegedly involved in legal or illegal facts,” said President of the Justice commission Mauro Andino.

His commission will be in charge of probing the documents released by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) and leaked from the Panamanian legal firm Mossack Fonseca.

The Justice commissioners started to meet and to request information to the relevant institutions like the Internal Revenue System (IRS), Bank Superintendence, Controller’s Office, among others.

As for the Control commission, if any wrongdoing is detected during the investigation, the Control commission will be in charge of starting impeachment proceedings, the commission's President Maria Jose Carrion said.

Andino added that all people named in the ICIJ documents published will be summoned for a hearing.

The moves comes as President Rafael Correa had announced his government will carry out a systematic and objective analysis of the 11.5 million documents leaked.

He also insisted that “all world citizens should demand the publication of all information.”
