Colombia: Indepaz Denounces 45th Massacre in 2023

A pregnant woman was murdered, the baby was delivered by emergency cesarean section, but died two days later.

Colombia's Institute for Development and Peace Studies denounced Tuesday a new massacre in Ansermanuevo, Valle del Cauca in which a married couple was killed, the woman was pregnant.

The victims identified as Gustavo Alberto Ramirez Rodriguez 39 years old and Johana Cataño, 34 "were attacked with firearms in a commercial establishment in the municipality of Ansermanuevo," in the Plaza Vieja neighborhood Indepaz said.

The pregnant woman underwent an emergency cesarean section to save the life of her 7-month-old baby, but the newborn finally died on Monday, June 12.

Colonel Wilson Román Silva, commander in charge of the Valle del Cauca Police, said that the man died at the Santa Ana Hospital, in Ansermanuevo, due to the seriousness of the injuries, while the woman was transferred to the San Juan de Dios Hospital, in the municipality of Cartago, where she finally died.

A married couple was attacked while in the company of other family members and friends, when they were suddenly attacked with firearms in a commercial establishment in the municipality of Ansermanuevo.

The motives of the murder and the identity of the alleged perpetrators are unknown. The commander said that "the National Police, in coordination with the Attorney General's Office, appointed a special group to capture those responsible for this unfortunate event."

This is the 45th massacre so far this year, according to Indepaz data. 

The Colombian institute also records that 75 social leaders have been killed this year, bringing the total to 1,484 since the signing of the peace accords.
