The tremor hit about 60 km north-northwest of Taltal at 10:54 p.m, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale struck near the Chilean coast on Wednesday night.

The tremor hit about 60 km north-northwest of Taltal at 10:54 p.m, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The are currently no reports of deaths or injuries.

The earthquake is the fourth tremor to hit the South American country since the eve of Christmas eve, but the third in the past three days.

A 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck 59km from Huasco on Dec. 23 was followed by a 4.5-magnitude tremor approximately 120km from Antofagasta on Christmas Day and a 4.4-magnitude quake 38km from Los Andes on Dec. 26, before the current event in Taltal.

Chile, which is known for experiencing high earthquake activity, holds the record for the largest-ever recorded tremor, the 1960 Valdivia earthquake. The quake reportedly measured between 9.4-9.6 in magnitude and rocked the region for 10 minutes.

Tsunamis in southern Chile and as far as Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines, eastern New Zealand, southeast Australia and the Aleutian Islands followed the Valdivia quake.
