At approximately 6:19 a.m., the earthquake struck the town of Bahia de Caraquez in the province of Manabi, and was felt in nearby areas such as Manta, Jaramijo, San Vicente, Puerto Lopez, Jama, and Pedernales with tremors being felt as far away as the nation’s capital of Quito. It’s still unknown whether the tremor’s caused any deaths or serious damage.

Former President Rafael Correa expressed his concern for the sea town posting in Twitter, “Strong quake in San Vicente and the bay. I hope everything is okay.”

“Here in Esmeraldas it was also felt strongly,” Correa continued. “It reminds me of harder times during my presidency.”

Over the past weeks, the sector has been the epicenter of numerous quakes, giving haunting reminders of the tumultuous 7.8 tremor that ripped the coastal region apart in April 2016. The earthquake killed at least 676 with another 16,000 injured and millions of dollars in damage.

The world’s most active earthquake belt, composed of a series of active volcanoes and affectionately called the Pacific Ring of Fire, runs through the South American nation. Many experts estimate 90 percent of the world’s earthquakes take place along these plates.
