Political leader and former guerilla Nidia Diaz said the late Marti, assassinated 86 years ago, has united the political party that bears his name.

Farabundo Marti, El Salvador's late revolutionary leader, was commemorated Friday at a ceremony in San Salvador 86 years after he was assassinated.

Nidia Diaz – the pseudonym of former Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) guerrilla María Marta Valladares Mendoza, now a lawyer and political leader – said Marti's legacy has united the political party that bears his name.

Diaz said the leader of the resistance during the 1932 Salvadoran peasant massacre inspired the creation of the Popular Liberation Forces of Farabundo Martí (FPL) and, in 1980, the FMLN.

The combatants adopted Marti's name because he inspired so many through his work, honesty and teaching the masses how to fight for the path of justice, freedom and good welfare for the people.

The ceremony was held on the same spot Marti was assassinated in 1932 for leading Indigenous peasants against the ruling Melendez-Quiñonez dynasty, and for publishing the Communist "Red Star" bulletin.
