A recent poll showed that the majority of the U.S. citizens don't want their country to strike Iran first and half of the population fears a full-fledged war.
Around 60 percent of citizens of the United States said the country should not conduct a pre-emptive attack on the Iranian military, while 12 percent advocate for striking first according to a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll.

The poll also revealed that 53 percent of U.S. citizens think of Iran as either a “serious” or “imminent” threat, up 6 percentage points from a similar poll from last July. In comparison, 58 percent of the country's population characterized North Korea as a threat and 51 percent characterized Russia as a threat.

Nearly half - 49 percent - of all U.S. citizens disapprove of how Republican Trump is handling relations with Iran, the poll found, with 31 percent saying they strongly disapprove. Overall, 39 percent approve of Trump’s policy.
If Iran attacked, however, 79 percent said that the U.S. military should retaliate: 40 percent favored a limited response with airstrikes, while 39 percent favored a full invasion. None of the countries, however, wants war.
The poll showed 61 percent of U.S. citizens still supported the 2015 deal between Iran and world powers to curb Iran’s potential pathway to a nuclear bomb in return for sanctions relief.
Tension has been increasing between the two countries since the U.S. President Donald Trump threatened Iran saying that any conflict will mean “the official end of Iran.”
The North American country has deployed a carrier group and B-52 bombers to the Gulf over what it termed Iranian 'threats.' This account has been met with widespread skepticism outside the United States.
