Maduro also said he would send a letter to Obama asking him to repeal the decree against Venezuela before he leaves office.

The Venezuelan government hopes to have relations of mutual respect with the United States under the upcoming administration with Donald Trump, President Nicolas Maduro said during a speech Sunday.

"I hope and will work so that hopefully during the administration of the next United States president, Donald Trump, Venezuela — our Bolivarian, independent, sovereign, peaceful, revolutionary Venezuela — will have the best relationship of respect with the United States of America," Maduro said during his weekly broadcast, "En contacto con Maduro"

The Venezuelan president further called on Trump to correct the mistakes of George W. Bush in Latin America and the world that were worsened by outgoing President Barack Obama.

"Mistakes can be overcome. Mistakes that were made with Venezuela, with Latin America, serious mistakes that George W. Bush made and unfortunately President Barack Obama made worse, of intervention, of threats against Venezuelan peace."

Maduro further said he would send a letter to Obama asking him to repeal the decree declaring Venezuela an "unusual and extraordinary threat" before he finishes his term on Jan. 20, 2017.

His comments came just hours after Obama said that Trump would “keep the status quo” of current Washington policy regarding South America and its country.

While Trump did not say much about his plans for the continent, he did declare in Florida during a campaign stop that he would support the people of Cuba and Venezuela against what he called the “oppressive regimes” of Maduro and President Raul Castro.
