On July 1, Ferreira tested positive for coronavirus and was instantly hospitalized. In recent days, her lung capacity dropped to 78 percent percentage and she had to be intubated.

“God wanted to take my mother. I cannot believe it. She fought so hard, so hard, but she could not resist,” the daughter of the victim said.

Days after President Jair Bolsonaro was discharged from COVID-19, Brazil's first lady was also confirmed positive for coronavirus and she is now in isolation.

The pandemic remains out of control five months after the first confirmed case appeared in this South American country. In those days, besides downplaying the effects of the virus, Bolsonaro said he would not worry or feel anything in case of being infected.
