The president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Peter Maurer, said Wednesday that cooperation with Venezuela is neutral, impartial and independent.

"Our approach is to respond to the needs of the population and not link our actions to politics," he said at a press conference in Caracas.
He indicated that "Venezuela is in a complex situation and there are considerable challenges," he added the role of the ICRC is to cooperate with the Government to implement development programs and help solve the main problems the society is facing.
In this regard, he reiterated that the ICRC "is a humanitarian organization that is dedicated to meeting the needs of the people, to see how we can reduce the negative effects for the population, through the programs we are developing in this country."
President of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro said on Twitter that meeting with Peter Maurer was positive, and government and ICRC reached international assistance understanding.

"During the working meeting with Peter Maurer, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross and his team, we reached productive agreements that will allow us to provide a better service to our people."
Peter Mauer held official meetings with the president of Venezuela, Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza and representatives of several ministries to agree on cooperation work. He also met with members of the civil society and Red Cross Movement partners in Venezuela.
Mauer reiterated that the cooperation with Venezuela respects the international framework of humanitarian aid defined in the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their Additional Protocols.
A Security Council meeting called by Washington was held Wednesday to discuss the ongoing crisis in the country during which Venezuela’s Ambassador Samuel Moncada denounced that a new coup attempt had just happened yesterday, as the U.S. is attempting to pillage Venezuelan's resources.
