The former NBA player is riding a wave of success after the Warriors won the championship last year and set a record with 73 regular-season wins this year.

Steve Kerr has won the title of coach of the year for the National Basketball Association.

Kerr and assistant coach Luke Walton, who served as interim head coach while Kerr recovered from serious back surgery complications, led the Golden State Warriors to an NBA-record 73 regular-season wins in the 2015-16 season.

The coach is expected to be given the award Wednesday before Game 5 of the first-round playoff series with the Houston Rockets.

Kerr, at a press conference after the announcement, said his award goes to everyone involved and "is about what we've built, what we've all built."

He also commented, "There were moments I didn't know if I would get back at all this season. I'm really thankful I improved to the point where I could coach."

Kerr was a five-time NBA championship winner as a player, and as a coach he has a record of 140 wins and 24 losses.

He acknowledged the great play of reigning MVP Stephen Curry, commenting on Curry's humility off-court and confidence on the court, he said, "That's a force. That's a powerful force."

In his first year with the Warriors last year, the team won the NBA title and he was second in the NBA coach of the year voting behind Atlanta's Mike Budenholzer.

Kerr stated, "One of our approaches as a team is to enjoy the process and to take joy out of what we're doing."
