Venezuela: Electoral Machines Installed for Local Elections

Roughly 32,805 polling stations are being installed across Venezuela for municipal elections on Sunday.

Millions of voters will head to the polls to elect 335 mayors as well as a governor for Zulia state. During the country’s most recent election, the elected candidate for Zulia was not sworn in before the National Constituent Assembly, forcing him to be dismissed.

The installation process is overseen by voting center coordinators as well as technicians from the National Electoral Center, or CNE. Voting technology is set to arrive to the centers under the protection of military officials. 

Measures are also being taken to make sure that the machines are working correctly. Verification of the machines will be done under the presence of CNE officials, representatives of political parties, voting center coordinators as well as local and international observers.  

“The Venezuelan electoral system is a process where the hand of man does not act at any time, but only to cast his vote and verify that the machine has responded to his will,” Nicanor Moscoso, president of the Council of Electoral Experts of Latin America, told HispanTV.

Moscoso described the Venezuelan electoral mechanism as a "sure process” that will “undoubtedly deliver to Venezuelans the real results of their democratic will."
