According to Brazilian authorities, the Venezuelan military helicopters took part in the rescue mission to deliver the Brazilians to the safety of Santa Lucia. Brazil has thanked Venezuela for their assistance.

The mission was coordinated by Brazil's Foreign Ministry, diplomat Arnaldo Salabert and two Brazilian companions.

Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico when it hit the country last week, displacing some 15,000 and leaving thousands more without water, power or communication.

Maria was the second major storm to the Caribbean in as many weeks, after Hurricane Irma.

Cuba, Dominica and the Dominican Republic are also struggling to recover from the impact of the hurricane.
