American troops along with Somalian special forces joined together to destroy the jihadist insurgent group's main training and command posts.

According to a statement from Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi, the bases were located in southern Somalia.

"Earlier today, I authorized our special forces with the support of our international partners to conduct a strike against an al-Shabaab training camp near Sakow," the statement read. "This was a successful strike that destroyed a key al-Shabaab command and supply hub. This will ultimately disrupt the enemy’s ability to conduct new attacks within Somalia."

The statement did not disclose the extent of the damage or whether there had been casualties.

There was no response from al-Shabaab.

The terror group lost control of many of its strongholds after being pushed out of Mogadishu in 2011.

But al-Shabaab remains a strong presence in the southern and central regions, orchestrating sporadic gun and bomb attacks.

Al Shabaab's mandate is to overthrow the Somali Government, drive out African Union peacekeeping troops and impose strict Islamic law.
