"Moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem is a violation of international law and goes against international conventions," said the Palestinian resistance group.

Palestinian resistance group Hamas has decried U.S. plans to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on Israel's May 14 Day of Independence — when Palestinians mark the Nakba, or mass expulsion of Arabs from their territory — branding them "new aggression" and "provocation."

"Moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem is a violation of international law and goes against international conventions," Hamas Spokesman Abdul-Latif al-Qanou said. "This would never legalize the Zionist occupation of our land or change the reality and identity of Jerusalem."

The group blamed the U.S. administration and Israel for "repercussions of the recent unjust and racist decision against al-Quds" intended to "suffocate the Palestinian cause."

Following the announcement by a U.S. official Friday, protests promptly broke out in Gaza and the West Bank, as they have done on a weekly basis since U.S. President Donald Trump first announced the move on December 6.

The embassy will likely be located at a U.S. facility in the Talpiyot neighborhood, currently used for consular affairs, including passport and visa processing.

The United States stood isolated during a UN General Assembly in late December, when Trump's declaration was rejected by 128 nations.

Israel has illegally occupied East Jerusalem since 1967's Six-Day War.
