US Activists Defy Blockade, Travel to Cuba with Medicines

A total of 41 U.S. activists are currently on their way to Havana, Cuba, in order to deliver a cargo of medicines and supplies as part of a protest against the U.S. blockade imposed on the Caribbean island for more than 50 years.

The 27th Pastors for Peace Caravan arrived in Mexico City on Monday and is expected to arrive in Havana in the coming days. It is led by U.S. activist Gail Walker, daughter of late U.S. Reverend Lucius Walker, a fierce advocate for ending the blockade. Reverand Walker began the caravan in 1992.

“This project is not only about my father or me, this is a community that participates in any region of the United States, Mexico, Central America, Europe, and around the world,” Gail Walker told Prensa Latina.

The contingent is comprised of U.S., European and Mexican activists. Some have taken part in all of the caravans. Walker herself has been involved for 20 years.

She added that although the relationship between the United States and Cuba is normalizing, the economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba continues to affect the lives of Cubans.

“The caravan comes to Havana with a cargo of medicines, after raising awareness in several communities about the effects of the blockade on the Caribbean island,” she said.
