The New Zealand singer, songwriter and record producer canceled the show scheduled for June 2018 after Palestinian activists urged her to pull out.

Palestine's Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement has declared another victory in the cultural boycott of Israel after New Zealand musician Lorde cancelled a forthcoming show in Tel Aviv.

The singer, songwriter and record producer – real name Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor – canceled the show scheduled for June 2018 after BDS activists urged her to pull out of the performance in protest against Israel's human-rights abuses of Palestinians.

In a statement distributed by the Israeli promoters, Lorde said: "I've received an overwhelming number of messages and letters and have had a lot of discussions with people holding many views, and I think the right decision at this time is to cancel the show."

The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel thanked Lorde via Twitter on Christmas Eve, posting: "Your unwavering commitment to progressive values inspires us and gives us hope."

The BDS movement is a non-violent initiative, inspired by the South African anti-apartheid movement, which seeks to increase international pressure until Israel ends the occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, Gaza and the Golan Heights.

Lorde joins international figures Roger Waters, Bjork, Lauryn Hill and Elvis Costello who have all endorsed the call for a cultural boycott of Israel.

Among other prominent BDS supporters are Archbishop Desmond Tutu, scholars Judith Butler and Naomi Klein, and writer Junot Diaz.
