Sanders: Guantanamo 'Makes Us Look Like Fools to Entire World'

As both Democratic Party presidential nominees, Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton, weighed in on President Barack Obama's new plan to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay, it was reported Wednesday that Republicans in the House of Representatives are preparing legal action against the move.

United States Senator Bernie Sanders, at a town hall meeting in South Carolina Tuesday evening, told the crowd that the prison makes the nation look foolish.

“We look like hypocrites and fools to the entire world,” he said.

Earlier in the day, CNN reports, Sanders released a statement that took a shot at his opponent.

"I am encouraged to see that the President is sending Congress a plan to shut down the Guantanamo Bay prison. As I have said for years, the prison at Guantanamo must be closed as quickly as possible," Sanders' statement said, adding, "others, including my opponent, have not always agreed with me."

Former Secretary of State Clinton did say Tuesday that she agreed with Obama’s decision, although she said that where the Guantanamo prison transfers end up "should be a matter of negotiation."

The Republicans, on the other hand, are confronting Obama's plan not with dialogue, but with the law.

House Speaker Paul Ryan told reporters Wednesday, "we are making legal preparations" in case Obama tries to "break the law" by bringing detainees from the prison in Cuba to the United States, which he said would violate restrictions that Congress had passed.
