The attack comes just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump chose to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal, despite advice to the contrary.

A Syrian military position near Damascus has been targeted by an Israeli airstrike, Syria's state news agency SANA is reporting.

There have been no casualties officially announced, and Syrian air defenses successfully intercepted two missiles in the Kisweh region.

The reports were confirmed by a Syrian military commander speaking to Reuters, who said that the strikes hit a Syrian military base.

Israel has not responded to or confirmed the reports, and has said it is not its policy to "respond to such foreign reports." The military has said, however, that it put its forces in occupied Golan Heights on high alert following "irregular activity" by Iranian military forces in Syria.

The reported attack comes just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump chose to withdraw the United States from the Iran nuclear deal

The move has been widely criticized in the international community as raising the potential risk for conflict, but Israel has praised the decision.

Only two hours after Trump's announcement, explosions were reported just south of Damascus.

Syria promptly condemned the U.S. decision to withdraw from the landmark agreement. An official told SANA: "Syria strongly condemns the U.S. president's decision, which proves once again the U.S. non-commitment to the international agreements and conventions.

"Syria – which renews its full solidarity with Iran, both its people and leadership – is confident that Iran is able to overcome the repercussions of the U.S. administration's hostile stance, which affects the security of the region and the world."
