Opposition Responds to Call for Dialogue with Violence: Maduro

Maduro called on the Venezuelan people to win the peace in the streets, schools and universities.

Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro said Tuesday that right-wing leaders have responded to the call for dialogue from his government with violence.

Speaking on the killing by police in Chacao of the former commander of the Bolivarian National Militia, Felix Velasquez, the Venezuelan president said that they are hot on the trail of those who paid for the assassination of the general. He asserted that the right wing is behind the targeted killings of government political figures.

Maduro called on the Venezuelan people to win the peace in the streets, schools and universities, "winning the peace every day."

On Tuesday, the opposition in Venezuela, the self-proclaimed Democratic Unity Roundtable, or MUD, missed exploratory meetings with international representatives that are to monitor the process of understanding.

In their absence, the secretary-general of the Union of South American Nations, or UNASUR, called on the Venezuelan opposition to return to talks with the government taking place in the Dominican Republic.
