The Brazilian director and actor Wagner Moura honored, at the 69th International Berlinale Film Festival, the memory of his compatriot Marielle Franco, Black LGBTQ activist murdered along with her driver, Anderson Gomes, on March 14, 2018.

Moura is debuting as a film director, and premiered his film "Marighella," using the opportunity and spotlight to show a placard with the following engraved: "Marille Franco (1979-2018), a true defender of the human rights of minorities, cowardly murdered on March 14, 2018."
The director affirmed in a press conference stated Friday that "Marighella, (was a) black, revolutionary, (who) was assassinated by State forces in 1969 in his car and, 50 years later, a black counselor died of the same way in the hands, most likely, of agents of the State," making a reference to Marielle Franco.
Moura added that "the Brazilian state is racist, the violence of 50 years ago is the same as that used today against the population of the favelas (poor populations in Brazil) and the police are not trained to protect the citizens."

The actor and director believes that his film could contribute to the people's interest and study of the history of the country, and stressed the need to preserve democracy, "if we continue in a democracy, we will continue to have an opportunity for change."
Marielle Franco, an Afro-Brazilian lesbian and feminist socialist counselor in Rio de Janeiro, critical of police violence and the right-wing Temer government, was assassinated in the Brazilian coastal city along with her driver Anderson Gomes on March 14, two weeks after she was named a rapporteur in a special commission to monitor military repression in poor areas of Rio.
Carlos Marighella was a Brazilian Marxist, writer and politician who fought against the repressive U.S.-backed military dictatorship (1964-1985). Marighella was summarily killed by police agents in an ambush in Sao Paulo on November 4, 1969. He was part of the Brazilian Communist Party and the National Liberation Action, and one of his most important contributions was the "Minimanual of the Urban Guerrilla."
