The LGBTTTI+ coalition also sent a policy document to all 3,400 candidates to work towards inclusion and non-discrimination.

Mexico's Coalition of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Trans and Intersex people (LGBTTTI+) is asking all candidates for the July 1 federal elections to publicly reject all forms of discrimination, violence and hate speech against the LGBTI community.

The request was made by the LGBTTTI+ in a public statement ahead of the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, celebrated on May 17.

"The fact that Mexico ranks in second place for hate crimes globally reveals the urgency not only of preventing these extreme acts of violence but also of implementing public policies that secure access to justice for LGBTI people that doesn't re-victimize," the statement read.

The coalition also criticized the National Front for the Family, along with religious groups and churches, for "promoting violence and discrimination."

International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia is celebrated to commemorate the decision by the World Health Organization to eliminate homosexuality from its list of mental disorders.

However, "de-homosexualization" clinics or therapies still exist throughout Latin America.

The coalition was recently form to combat this and other types of violence and discrimination. It is made up of 190 activists.

Earlier this year, the coalition drafted a policy document that will be presented to all 3,400 national candidates. The document has seven policy cornerstones, including non-discriminatory and inclusive health and education; labor rights and economic inclusion; inclusive cultural content and media; political participation, and strengthening the secular state.

According to the coalition, "candidates should set the example and show solidarity with our demand for clarification and justice for the people murdered, disappeared and physically violated."
