AMLO has promised to end or significantly reduce U.S. energy imports, boost domestic gas production and bolster social programs when he takes office in December.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was received by Mexican President-Elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) on Friday and said the United States wishes to have a "cordial" relation with the leftist leader, while AMLO delivered a proposal to the Trump administration.

The president-elect gave the delegation a proposal to deliver to U.S. President Donald Trump, which "contains key points of the Mexican-United States bilateral relation, that have to do with commerce and the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)," according to AMLO's future foreign minister, Ebrard Casaubon.

"We hope to have a response... we believe the most intelligent thing to do is to define what areas of understanding we can have in the coming years," Casaubon said.

According to White House adviser Jared Kushner, who also attended the meeting, the delegation sought to tell AMLO that the Trump administration "seeks a cordial relation" with Mexico, and hopes "to find understanding on the principle matters of the bilateral relation."

Casaubon described the meeting as "frank, respecful and cordial," and said he believes they can be "reasonably optimistic that Mexico can find a base of understanding."

AMLO, who was elected on a surge of discontent with the established Mexican political parties, has promised to "put Trump in his place," and made Mexican economic and political sovereignty a cornerstone of his campaign.

He has also promised to end or significantly reduce U.S. energy imports, boost domestic gas production and bolster social programs when he takes office in December.
