Mexico: 10 People Killed in Car Crash Along Acapulco Highway

Ten people died in a highway car crash late Friday night in the city of Tecpan de Galeana just outside of Acapulco, in southwest Mexico.

The crash involved a large van with nine passengers, five of whom were originally from Mexico and residents of Washington, D.C. They were in the area on vacation.

The other two vehicles involved were a small truck and a motorcycle carrying two men. The violent crash set the vehicles ablaze, causing further destruction and loss of life. Two of the passengers suffered major injuries. They were ages eight and 18.  

Guerrero state authorities said accident victims included a one and a four-year-old child. The others who lost their lives in the major accident ranged from 26 to 76 years old. 

The highway, which runs along the Pacific coast linking the resort towns of Acapulco and Zihuatanejo, is more heavily traveled during the holiday season. 

Investigators are still trying to figure out the immediate cause of the multi-vehicle collision.

Last week, 12 tourists, including several from the United States, Brazil, Canada and Sweden, were killed in the tourist-heavy area of Quintana Roo when their bus crashed and flipped over on a coastal highway.
