The athlete’s stunning goal soared 35 meters across the field like a thunderbolt and slammed Germany’s net, right under goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen’s waving arms.
Although this goal was not pivotal for the game’s outcome, with only a minute left on the clock, the triumphant score wowed the crowds and, despite Mexico’s loss, clearly succeeded in making an impression on a global level.
The decision of the series’ best goal was left to the online community, who gave a solid 55 percent of the votes to the Mexican soccer player, with second and third places awarded to his teammate, Raul Jimenez, and Portuguese athlete Andre Silva.
FIFA also reported other titles awarded to fan favorites like German captain Julian Draxler, who received the Ball of Gold award, Chilean goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, who received the Best Match Player award and Germany’s Timo Wener as top scorer.
