"Long live Messi!" the Venezuelan leader roared as the Blaugrana star netted a historic 301 La Liga goals.

Sometimes something so sublime happens in soccer that the world shudders on its hinges.

And Lionel Messi scoring his 300th and 301st goals in the Spanish league on Wednesday was one of them.

In fact, even Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro interrupted his speech announcing huge economic reforms to give a shout out to the Argentine superstar.

“Long live Messi!” he roared, before asking the audience who supported Barcelona and who supported Real Madrid.

Never before has a single player in La Liga scored 300, let alone 301 goals.

And after the 3-1 defeat of Sporting Gijon (Luis Suarez also netted one) Messi has now scored 28 goals in all competitions this season, despite spending a month on the sidelines with injury.

''It's a privilege to be able to count on Leo,'' Barcelona coach Luis Enrique said. ''We faced some difficulties against a team that knows how to defend well, but I think we played a very complete game.''

Messi has been in extraordinary form this season, most recently helping Luis Suarez convert a penalty in an audacious move that will go down in the history books.

The Argentine forward poked the ball forward by a couple of yards to his right and Suarez, running at full pelt, beat the Celta Vigo defense to sidefoot the ball past a flagging Sergio Valdes into the goal.

Messi already holds various records, including the most Ballon d’Or awards and the Guinness World Record for most goals scored in a European calendar year.

And who would bet against "the Messiah" from breaking more records and securing more titles in future?

Certainly not us - and probably not Maduro!
