Allies of Milagro Sala say her arrest is a politically-motivated campaign being exploited to tarnish her public image.

Milagro Sala, an Indigenous leader and member of South America’s Parliament of the South, Parlasur, has now spent 100 days in prison since her controversial arrest in January by Argentine police on charges of public disturbance.

The high-profile case has been criticized by human rights groups, who argue her arrest is a form of revenge against the activist and social movement leader due to her being an ally of former leftist presidents Cristina and Nestor Kirchner.

Sala has been dubbed the first political prisoner of President Mauricio Macri's government.

The right-wing government of Mauricio Macri accuses Sala of stealing funds destined for cooperatives related to her group, the Association of State Workers (ASW).

However, the ASW say the allegations are baseless and the Argentine justice system lacks independence, also accusing the local government of Jujuy of being guilty of fraud.

Last month, the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention demanded the Macri administration explain why social leader Milagro Sala has been in jail for months.
