A 2009 WikiLeaks cable revealed that Argentine presidential candidate Mauricio Macri requested help from the U.S. government against Argentina’s ruling Front for Victory party.

According to a leaked diplomatic cable, Argentine presidential Candidate Mauricio Macri accused the United States of being “too soft” in its dealings with the Argentina government.

The 2009 cable, which was originally published by WikiLeaks, documents a conversation between the former U.S. ambassador to Argentina and Macri, in which he criticizes the the U.S government’s so called posturing towards the ruling Front For Victory (PVF) party.

The leaked document contains many complaints about the Kirchners by Macri, including that they had “succeeded in alienating the United States.”

“This would probably be a bombshell revelation in any country’s presidential election,” Mark Weisbrot from the Center of Economic Policy and Research (CEPR) said on Thursday in a press release.

“Asking a powerful foreign country, especially the U.S.—considering its track record in Argentina—to come down harder on your own government is not likely to be viewed positively,” Weisbrot added.

The revelation comes as Argentines prepare to cast their vote on Sunday in what is expected to be a tight presidential election.

During the first round of voting in October, ruling party candidate Daniel Scioli and Macri finished head to head, with 36.9 percent of the vote and 34.3 percent respectively.

The tight race forced a runoff, an unusual affair in Argentine politics.
