According to Israel, the attacks are retaliation for wayward mortar fire from Golan Heights in Syria.

"In response to projectiles launched earlier today at Israel from Syria, Israeli forces targeted the Syrian military artillery position that was the source of the previous fire," read a statement released by the Israeli government on Saturday.

In recent years, Israel has routinely attacked military targets in neighboring Syria in an attempt to bolster interest groups that have been suffering heavy defeats against Syrian Government forces.

The release detailed that both stray rounds which landed in the occupied Golan Heights region were the "result of internal fighting in Syria." It further warned that "Israel holds the Syrian regime responsible for any breach of its borders and will act accordingly."

No casualties have been reported from the incident.

The border separating Syria and Israeli-occupied Golan Heights have been a hotbed of military exchange, that have claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people, since foreign-backed fighters were introduced into the area in 2011.

Damascus, which was yesterday attacked by suicide bombers, has accused Israel and its allies of aiding terrorist groups that are operating inside the Arab country.
