Caceres' Relatives: No Confidence in Official Investigation
Four men were arrested on Monday in the capital of Tegucigalpa, accused of being behind the killing of the celebrated Indigenous environmental activist. Caceres was shot dead two months ago in her home after receiving numerous death threats for her activism.
Authorities say the accused men will be presented in court on Friday. Three of them are allegedly the masterminds of the crime and the other is the one who pulled the trigger.
The arrested men have been identified as: Douglas Geovany Bustillo, Sergio Ramon Rodriguez, Mariano Díaz Chavez and Edilson Antonio Duarte.
Unofficial reports indicate that the killer was Edilson Duarte, 25, who allegedly worked before as a hitman.
Supporters of Caceres claim that the company Desarrollos Energeticos Sociedad Anonima hired contract killers to murder activists like her.
Caceres was a 45-year-old mother of four who gained prominence for leading the Indigenous Lenca people in a struggle against a hydroelectric dam project that would have flooded a massive region of native lands and cut off water supplies to her people.
