The 21-year-old man, who remains in police custody, was taken in for questioning at about 11:50 p.m. His arrest came only hours after that of an 18-year-old male, who was earlier held in relation to the attack which injured 29 people.

Officials call the teen's arrest "significant," but have not given further details regarding the suspect. Police also raided an apartment in the outskirts of London on suspicion that evidence related to the bombing was inside. They subsequently evacuated the apartment building.

An organization affiliated with the Islamic State group officially took responsibility for the attack, The Independent reported. However, some experts warn about the veracity of the claim.

Just as the suspect was taken into custody, the military was deployed to patrol the streets as London remains on “critical alert.” This is the fourth time that the United Kingdom has commissioned this level of alert since 2006.

"Officers and staff from throughout the Met have been called in to provide extra shifts and yet again I am hugely proud of their response,” London Mayor Sadiq Khan said in a statement.

“We are pleased that there has been a significant arrest this morning but the investigation continues and updates on this will be provided as we are able to.”

He and other local officials are warning people in London to "remain alert and vigilant" and to report any "suspicious" activity to a national Anti-Terrorist Hotline.

Yesterday, after witnesses reported a loud bang and a fireball resulting in flash burns, social media circulated images of a burning white bucket that appeared to have been the source of the explosion. Officials now know that the explosion was detonated by a highly-volatile chemical, triacetone triperoxide, which was also used in the Barcelona attacks in August.
