The government also hailed Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on his victory in Sunday's presidential election and express confidence that the social transformations initiated by Commander Hugo Chavez will continue to benefit millions of Venezuelans.

“I congratulate the citizens of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela for the democratic election day held this Sunday, May 20,” El Salvador's president, Salvador Sánchez, said.

The government said it believes that the Venezuelan elections are a fundamental step in the Bolivarian Republic's democratic progress.

“Venezuela gives example, because instead of opting for violence, opted for democracy, respect for its Constitution and laws, as well as obedience to the will of the people expressed in the polls,” the release declared.
