“If you know I escape, why do you catch me.”
Peña Nieto tweeted on Friday that the world's top drug lord had been captured. “I want to inform all Mexicans that Joaquin Guzman Loera has been arrested,” he said.
However, people’s reaction were not cheerful, especially when the news comes just as the Mexican economy has seen the peso hit all-time lows against the U.S. dollar – something critics are saying is more than just a coincidence.
I caught El Chapo! … And yeah, the dollar is at 20 pesos.
The infamous drug kingpin first escaped prison in 2001 by bribing prison officials. He was recaptured by Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto's government 13 years later, but again escaped using an elaborate underground tunnel in July 2015.
Guzman’s capture followed an armed clash between members of Mexico’s Navy and the drug lord’s armed guards at a roadside motel in the city of Los Mochis in Guzman’s home state of Sinaloa.
In addition to the Mexican marines, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and U.S Marshals were involved in the recapturing.
El Chapo is considered one of the world’s most dangerous, richest and powerful drug traffickers. He faces multiple federal drug trafficking charges in both the U.S. and Mexico and is also wanted by Interpol.
