Dove Slammed for Racist Ad Featuring Black Woman Turning White

Dooga Royall asked, “What is Dove even trying to convey besides blatant racism?”

International outrage has forced the personal care brand Dove to apologize for an ad campaign that featured a Black woman miraculously turning into a white woman after presumably lathering up and rinsing off one of the company's soap products.

Makeup artist Naythemua first posted the ad on Facebook where she wrote, “What does America tell Black people … that we are judged by the color of our skin and that includes what is considered beautiful in this country.”

She added that Dove's decision to release the ad, considering rampant incidents of institutional and societal racism, “makes no sense.”

The ad shows a Black woman taking off her T-shirt. As she pulls it over her head, viewers see her dramatic transformation in the form of a smiling, brunette who is white.

Dooga Royall asked, “What is Dove even trying to convey besides blatant racism?”

Sha Nii wrote, “I mean that's what I use today, but no more Dove for me, racism will never end.”

Some who viewed the campaign attempted to calm the storm by noting that the white woman turned Asian as she took off her T-shirt. Nevertheless, this is not the first time Dove has found itself embroiled in controversy after producing other racists ads.

The brand was accused of racism in 2011 when it lined up three women on a color gradient scale with the dark woman registered as being the dirtiest and the white woman ranked as being the cleanest.

Dove, mimicking its response back in 2011, was quick to offer an apology after consumers revolted against its latest ad.

"An image we recently posted on Facebook missed the mark in representing women of color thoughtfully. We deeply regret the offense it caused," read the statement.
