The singer’s publicist said she died during a short recording trip to London, but declined to comment on the cause of death.
“Family members are devastated to hear the breaking news and have requested privacy at this very difficult time,” the publicist, Lindsey Holmes, said in a statement.

The singer's distinct voice and character propelled her group to worldwide fame, with the hits “Zombie” and “Linger,” which have remained popular and well-known cross-generationally since the early 1990's.

O'Riordan was at times known for being averse to her sudden global fame, with a 1996 tour being canceled for reasons of “exhaustion.” She left the Cranberries in 2003, producing two solo albums, and reformed the group in 2009.

Although the Cranberries had begun a tour through Europe and the United States, the latter part of the dates had to be canceled due to “medical reasons associated with a back problem.”

A Facebook post just before Christmas said that she was “feeling good,” and many were speculating that she might begin performing again soon.
