Ramos is a newcomer to the political scene. However, he is well connected to influential people, who are in turn well connected to right-wing paramilitaries.

His party is headed by former President Alvaro Uribe, a right-winger whose presidency has witnessed many controversies. One of these was evidence leading to several senators from his party being convicted of connections and formation of paramilitaries that continue to terrorize Colombia to this day.

His father, Luis Alfredo Ramos, was also a politician and governor of the department of Antioquia. He was a member of the Conservative Party for years, before joining the Centro Democratico in 2013.

He was also charged and apprehended for involvement with paramilitaries that same year. The Colombian high court ordered his arrest on August 28, 2013.

He remains in prison for these connections.
