China has long opposed Israel's illegal occupation of Palestine.

On the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, China reiterated its support for Palestine, saying that solving the issue is conducive to promoting global peace and stability.

Chinese President Xi Jinping said Wednesday that a just settlement for Palestinians must be achieved, as it is in their interest as well as the interest of countries in the region.

“The Palestinian issue is the root problem of the Middle East issues, which is of great concern for long-lasting peace, prosperity and development of the Middle East countries, including Palestine,” said Xi.

“China firmly supports Palestinian-Israeli peace,” the President continued, adding that the country’s four-point propositions proposed in July included promoting the settling of the Palestinian issue.

At a press conference in Beijing in April with Palestine's Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki, China's Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, reiterated China’s longstanding support for an end to Israel's illegal occupation of Palestine and the creation of an independent Palestinian state.

Wang had noted the urgency of restarting Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, which remain stalled in the face of Israel’s continued construction of illegal settlements and a U.S. administration hell-bent on entrenching the most extreme of Israel’s apartheid policies.

al-Maliki had expressed hope that China will play a greater role in brokering a peace agreement.

Last year, Xi had voiced support for the establishment of East Jerusalem as the capital of the Palestinian state, warning against the “marginalization” of the Palestinian struggle for statehood.
