This move comes in an attempt to prevent people from making memes with reference to President Xi Jinping. The Chinese authorities have been largely unsuccessful, over the years, in restricting people from circumventing their censorship protocols.

For a number of years now, Winnie The Pooh has been the go-to graphic comparison for bloggers who poke fun at the Chinese president.

Now, Pooh’s name in Chinese is blocked on the country’s WeChat app and the internet scrubbed of previous images comparing the president to the animated character.

Replacing the president with a cartoon bear is viewed, by the authorities, as an attempt to embarrass and undermine Xi's superiority.

The government will now tighten censorship to limit the wide-ranging criticism or mocking of the president.
