Hours after meeting with former Interior and Transport Minister Florencio Randazzo in Buenos Aires, ex-Argentine President Cristina Fernandez announced plans to continue her candidacy for Senate, Clarin reported.

The former president will compete for the first time in an election as an opposition candidate. Jorge Taiana will accompany her as the second candidate for senator.

“Yesterday, I was given the opportunity to talk to her (Cristina). We went basically to raise what we believe, that we must not condemn Argentina to discuss the past and that it is best to propose a generational change in Argentine politics and we feel that Florencio embodies it,” campaign chief Alberto Fernandez told Radio Miter Saturday.

During the meeting, they reportedly discussed the technicalities of the proposals. Fernandez stated that the former minister wasn’t convinced her approach would be modern and that her presence could possibly “turn the entire electoral arena into a discussion about the past,” which might deter voters.

“What Florencio proposed is also to review what has happened because it is very difficult to talk to citizens without explaining things from the past, which evidently determined to a large extent the triumph of Macri," she added.

Prior to her meeting with Randazzo, Fernandez de Kirchner said, “We are absolutely open to trying to unite everything that is an opposition space.”

Fernandez served as president from 2007 to 2015.
