Argentine coast guards fired on a Chinese fishing vessel which was reportedly fishing illegally in the waters of the South American country.
Security ministry officials reported that the Jing Yuan 626, along with four ally ships, disobeyed warnings and instead made elaborate and reckless maneuvers to elude Mantilla coast guards.
“Following the protocols of action warning shots were discharged, which were not obeyed by the ship,” a release from the officials stated. The Chinese vessel disregarded instructions from Argentine authorities to discontinue approach and stand down for inspection of its cargo.
As a result, the maritime police crew was forced to fire machine guns and a cannon – in low-visibility weather conditions – at the persistent fishing vessel.
The standoff, which enlisted the assistance of a PA-22 plane, lasted almost 8 hours.
The ship eventually retreated beyond Argentine waters.
Minister of Security Patricia Bullrich commended the coast guards for arduously securing the borders of the country.
