Discrimination against Latinos persists in the U.S. even though the country has the highest population of Latinos in the world.

More than half of Latinos living in the United States have been the victim of abuse and discrimination, according to a survey by Pew Research released Wednesday.

Around 52 percent of Latinos in the nation claim to have been ill-treated because of their race or ethnicity, in a country that has 56.6 million Latinos, according to the survey.

Discrimination and unfair treatment vary depending on age, skin color and other factors, the author's report.

Sixty-five percent of Latinos aged between 18 to 29 years claim to have been discriminated against, while 35 percent of those aged 50 said they have received abusive treatment.

However, there is a difference between those born in the U.S. and those who have lived in the country for a short period of time.

According to the survey, 62 percent of those born in the U.S. reported being victims of abuse, compared to 41 percent of those who traveled.

As for skin color, 56 percent of Black Latinos have been discriminated against, while 41 percent of "white Hispanics" claim to have been the victim of an abuse.

The Pew Research Center conducted the survey between February 29 and May 8, 2016 with the participation of 3,000 adults and a margin of error of 2.2 percent.
